It has long been rumoured that there would be a big-screen version of The
Simpsons. Now it appears there may be some substance behind those
rumours. Chris Meledandri, animation executive at 20th Century Fox
film studio, has confirmed that a movie is now indeed planned. In a recent
interview he was quoted as saying that the project "is in the very early stages
of developing an idea for the movie".
Subsequently, the producer of The Simpsons, Mike Reiss has said that he
expects the movie to be released in the second half of 2006.
According to Reiss he has wanted to do a movie of The Simpsons for the last
13 years, since the second series of the show. Speaking about the
commission Reiss said: "Finally, Fox said, 'Let's just do it!' We never had the
greatest idea that was compelling, but Fox said, 'Maybe if we start paying you,
you'll get inspired.' And sure enough it worked."
The Simpsons is now in it's 15th series and next year is set to be America's
longest running comedy.
