The Oscar nominations have been announced! As usual, comedy isn't getting
much of a look in. But in the oh-so-small category of Best Animated Feature
Film, we can proudly hold up Wallace And Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit
as an example of British success! They're up against Howl's Moving Castle and
Corpse Bride by Tim Burton.
Oscar isn't exactly well known for nominating comedies. The film industry
would much rather we all stroke our chins and look thoughtful as Brokeback
Mountain, Munich and Capote fill our screens, before diving into deep
conversation about whether Dame Judi Dench or Keira Knightley should win Best
Actress.
Frankly, when the film starts it is entertainment I look for first. And I was
incredibly entertained in Wallace and Gromit this past year.
Here's to the little animated chums, and all at Aardman Studios. May their
Award Cabinet never stand empty!
Edit: It has since been pointed out to me that Dame Judi Dench has also been
nominated for her role in the UK comedy Mrs Henderson Presents. We at
Funny.co.uk do, of course, wish her all the best. However, she does already have
a fair few awards and I'm sure she wouldn't mind letting someone else have this
one. Keira Knightley, perhaps.
