Hosted by UK comedy genius Bill Bailey, The 2006 Empire Awards happened last
night, the only awards in the UK to be voted for by the public, and the results
(with the emphasis on comedy, of course) are here! The hangovers, of course, are
still happening somewhere else.
First up, Best Newcomer went to the very lovely Kelly Reilly for her roles in
both Mrs. Henderson Presents and Pride and Prejudice. The thoughts occours that
Mrs Henderson Presents Pride and Prejudice would possibly have been an even
better film.
Best comedy went to Team
America: World Police, beating off competition from The
Hitchhikers Guide, The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse, Wallace
and Gromit and the Wedding Crashers. In the spirit of neutral reporting, I'm
not going to say anything further.
Best thriller was voted as Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang which is an absolutely
brilliant film that nobody went to see, and is in fact much, much funnier than
Team
America.
A somewhat disbelieving Steve Box and Nick Park picked up the Best Director
award for Wallace
and Gromit, Curse of the Were-Rabbit, beating off a list of somewhat well
known people. Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan - the usual
crowd.
