Despite being banned on religious grounds, latest
Jim Carrey film "Bruce
Almighty" will now be shown in Malaysia after all. As Funny.co.uk reported last month
, a Malaysian government minister stepped in, stamped his feet a bit,
overruled the Film Censorship board and said "We cannot equate ourselves with
God almighty even as a joke."
Meanwhile the rest of the Malaysian government were dancing around behind
him wearing fake wigs and beards, shouting "Look at me! I'm God!" and trying to
part things. It is believed that a fellow minister took Abdul Hamid Zainal
Abidin aside and said, loosely translated, "Calm down me old china! Only a
movie, innit!?".
An official said that the revised decision was made after the movie had been
viewed and assessed several times by numerous government officials including
those from the Islamic Development Department and the Film Censorship board.
Key figures in Malaysia's own entertainment industry
were also at a loss about the reasons for the original banning of the film,
commenting that it is "just a comedy". Bruce
Almighty
will now be released with an "18PL" certificate, much higher than the "12A"
it was given in the UK.
