After a sixth month series of television specials and voting, the BBC's
hunt for Britains Best Sitcom concluded at the weekend. Over 1.5 million
votes were cast during a special live final hosted by Jonathan Ross, in which
Only Fools & Horses was crowned with the honour of "Britains Best
Sitcom".
Del and Rodney secured more than 340,000 votes for the sitcom, which has now
run for more than 23 years, beating off competition from Blackadder, which came
second, and The Vicar of Dibley which came a surprising third.
Dad's Army came in at a very respectable fourth place, and in perhaps the
biggest shock of the evening Fawlty Towers came a rather disappointing
Fifth.
Other finalists, listed in order, were: Yes Minister, Porridge, Open all
Hours, The Good Life and One Foot in the Grave.
David Jason (Del Boy), speaking about the result said: "I am delighted that
something which gave me some of the happiest times of my life still gives
pleasure to so many people."
