Alexie Sayle is one of eight
authors taking part in a BBC writing competition which started recently.
The BBC Three show, hosted by
Claudia Winkleman, is called End of
Story; its
premise is that the authors start a short story and then it is up to the members
of the general public to complete it. The three best endings for each author
will feature on a BBC3 show, the winners will get a hand-bound copy of their
complete story and “will also get to spend time with their chosen author”.
Sayle’s contribution is called Imitating Katherine Walker and is about
a man who confuses reality with fiction after he creates a non-existent lodger
to get rid of a couple of annoying guests.
He has previously written two
short story collections (Barcelona
Plates and The Dog Catcher), a
novel (Overtaken), articles for many
newspapers and magazines, numerous sketch shows and the hit song, Ello John, Gotta New Motor?
The beginnings are available to
download from http://www.bbc.co.uk/endofstory/ on
2nd May and the competition is to close on 31st May.
The other authors are Ian Rankin,
Sue Townsend, Fay Weldon, Marian Keyes, Joanne Harris, Shaun Hutson and Ed
McBain.
