On Monday, Rickay Gervais (star of the Office and so forth) was quoted
as saying that the BBC had offered him a £5m 'golden handcuffs' deal to stay
exclusive to the BBC - and had turned it down. Today, the BBC is denying
this.
Gervais - quoted from a Heat magazine interview - said "It's a bad idea for both parties. The only good thing
about them is that they offer you loads of money to do it, but it promotes
laziness and extravagance."
The BBC have responded with their usual vigour, saying the actor was "talking
broadly, saying a golden handcuffs deal wouldn't work for him personally".
"An exclusive £5m deal has never been offered," she added.
Gervais is currently appearing in Valiant, voicing a scruffy pigeon, and
rehearsing Extras the show he has already dubbed "what some people are calling
the disappointing follow up to The Office".
