With the resounding public and
critical success of Eric Idle’s of Spamalot (adaptation of Monty
Python And The Holy Grail) on Broadway it seems that a new lease of life
may have been injected into the creators of the source material. Or perhaps,
‘band wagon’ and ‘jumping on’ are a couple of phrases that come to mind.
After so much speculation,
conjecture and denial the Pythons are making a comeback. A proper comeback, not
like that virtual reunion they did for their Meaning of Life DVD
release but an actual series. And not even a repeat series or clip show or
documentary; a real new series with each of the team writing and producing their
own episode reworking their favourite scenes from the series and films.
John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry
Gilliam, Michael Palin and Terry Jones will then combine forces for the final
episode as a tribute to Graham Chapman. Unfortunately (or perhaps ‘predictably’)
Monty Python’s Personal Best is being made for American network PBS
expected to be aired next year but has, as yet, no firm plans for a UK release
apart from a half-hearted response from a BBC spokesperson who said, “This
sounds like a really interesting project and something we would definitely like
to hear more about.”
Yeah? Well with that enthusiasm
you might be hearing about it on Channel Five.
