A sexual harassment case that was brought against Friends
writers 6 years ago was finally thrown out of the California Supreme Court on
20th April.
Amaani Lyle, who was a studio assistant in 1999, accused the defendants -
Adam Chase, Gregory Malins and Andrew Reich - that certain conversations held
during the writers' meetings could be construed as harassment. She alleged that
the men openly made sexually explicit comments about their sex lives and those
of Courtney Cox, David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston.
After a unanimous decision was made by the justices that there was no case,
Justice Marvin Baxter stated, "Most of the sexually coarse and vulgar language
at issue did not involve and was not aimed at plaintiff or other women in the
workplace." It had also been made clear that Lyle had been warned of the
"adult-orientated … sexual themes" of the show before she was employed and
deemed that smutty talk would be an expected part of the creative process.
The writers stated, "We maintain, as we have since day one in this case, that
the majority of the allegations the plaintiff made against us are complete and
total fabrications."
Lyle had actually been fired after four months employment for not being able
to transcribe fast enough.
'Sorry? Is that with one 'c' or two?'
