The glory days of news satire is to return to our screens in August as
a new series is to be aired on BBC2 penned by the genius Armando Iannucci.
Responsible for previous televisual greats including The Mary Whitehouse
Experience, The Day Today and Knowing Me, Knowing You, Iannucci has written and
presents Time Trumpet.
Its concept is to present retrospective news clips from the perspective of
fifty years in the future mocking the politics and media of today as well as
projecting current affairs into bizarre and, sometimes, surreal events.
Iannucci has been mixing and splicing stock footage of politicians and
celebrities with mock reportage and gags to come up with his twisted view of the
future. Stories like Tony Blair's mental breakdown in 2007 and his resulting
exile to Baghdad, wandering the streets and rambling incoherently about
buses.
There also comes the shocking revelation that Camilla Parker Bowles is
actually a practical joke being played on the World by Channel 4.
Iannucci has also announced that he plans to inject some new passion into
British sit coms on the basis of his recent lectures into the history and
downfall thereof.
He said, “I just wanted to reply to all the criticisms I made in the lecture.
I want to put my money where my mouth is and come up with the next Porridge, or
Steptoe, or Only Fools.”
