"Thou shall not build false idols". One of the ten commandments; I
think one of the less important ones (maybe the seventh, or the ninth
one). However, this has not detterred the residents of Chorley in
Lancashire, who have been prepared to risk a plague of locusts to build a bronze
statue of Dave Spikey, to honour the Phoenix Nights star.
The Mayor of Chorley, which is Spikey's home town, said "The council wanted a
figure who summed up the idea of culture. An alternative comedian who appears on
Channel 4 was a popular option."
The bronze cast will be presented to Spikey, who played club compère Jerry St
Clair, at his gig in the town on 3rd May.
