No, it wasn't a case of comedy loving dentists building a shrine to Spike
Milligan out of dental bacteria and several who did come, carrying
jars, were turned away dissappointed. Instead an honourary plaque,
paid for by the Heritage Foundation, was placed above the door of the late Goons
star's former flat in Bayswater, west London.
The unveiling was performed by Eric Sykes, a lifelong friend and co-writer,
with Milligan, of 24 episodes the classic radio comedy "The Goon Show".
Sykes said that he was hounoured to be asked to unveil the plaque and
described Milligan as a "masterclass comic" who was "like a brother" to
him. "Our suits even fitted each other" he joked.
Milligan, who had been the last surviving member of the Goon Show cast, and
died in February 2002 from suspected liver failure. He was
83.
