True connoisseurs of British
comedy will, at least, be aware of if not know the ground-breaking 60’s radio
show that was Round The Horne
starring, amongst others, the ingenious Kenneth Williams. It is accepted that if
it had not been for this surreal, overtly camp and innuendo ridden show then
there may not have been The Goon
Show, the Carry On… films and Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
The radio show ran from 1965 to
1969 and, at its peak, had an audience of 15 million listeners. It has been
adapted for the stage by the only surviving member of the original writing team
(which included Barry Took and Marty Feldman), Brian Cooke, and will be aired on
BBC Four later this month.
Round The Horne… Revisited stars Charles Armstrong, Kate Brown, Nigel Harrison, Jonathan
Rigby and Robin Sebastian and is an amalgamation and edit of sketches from the
sixty-six radio shows and also includes a few totally original pieces.
