'Wit'. It's an important element of comedy. For many stand-up
comedians one of the most regular and most telling demonstrations of their
ability to 'think on their feet' can be seen in how they deal with
hecklers. Some comics deal with the arrogant and drunken ramblings shouted
by an audience member as a chance to demonstrate their ability to entertain
the audience with a clever put-down. Others just crumble under the
deviation from their 'script' and go crying for their mummy, or other parental
figure in a dress.
It would appear that yet again that the aging relic of the 'dark old days'
of comedy, Jim Davidson, falls into the latter of these two categories.
Less than a month after Jim Davidson walked off stage refusing to play
for an audience because there were people with disabilities in the front row,
Davidson last week stormed off stage because he was heckled by an audience
member. However, he returned after the offending audience member was
ejected from Dartford theatre.
One member of the crowd told the People newspaper: "Jim seemed taken aback.
He said he'd had a bad day and his car had been clamped."
So just when we thought our opinion of Jim Davidson could not get any lower,
he manages to go and decsend by yet another notch on the
'Comedy-Respect-O-Meter'. We would like to demonstrate our respect for the
man in a way that any American Flag supporters may be familiar with, by flying
Jim Davidson upside down in public. (see top of page).
