In a gripping final on Saturday 28 February, character comedian Peter
Aterman saw off competition to be named The Hackney Empire New Act of the Year
2004. The panel of judges, comprising comedy journalists, agents and producers,
considered twelve acts ranging from traditional stand up, juggling, impressions,
character material and sand dancers. The evening was compered by Arthur Smith,
making an ever welcome return to the Hackney Empire stage.
Peter
Aterman's act, praised by the judge's panel for its originality, was a comedic
monologue in which an Italian tour guide leads a group of American tourists
round St. Peter's in Rome. It delighted judges and audience alike and earned
Peter the top prize which was presented by last year's winner, Matt Kirshen.
Kerry Godliman was placed second, impressing judges with her
acutely observed stand up act. Third place was hotly contended and eventually
held jointly by comedy impressionist Drew Cameron and observational stand up Ava
Videl, with Roisin Conary just missing out.
Commenting on the
night, Producer Claire Muldoon said, "It was a terrific to have New Act of the
Year back in our newly restored theatre. It was a fantastic night and one of our
most international yet with acts from Canada, Spain, Ireland and Scotland.
Hackney still had a look in with the presence of the Homerton Harem dancers
though!"
The Hackney Empire New Act of the Year has helped to launch the careers of
numerous UK based comedians. Previous finalists include: Ronnie Ancona, Linda
Smith, Rhod Gilbert, Ardal O'Hanlon, Jo Brand and Alistair McGowan. The
competition, which runs each year, returned this year tothe newly restored
Matcham Auditorium which reopened in January 2004.
