London's Grosvenor House Hotel last night played
host to the Emma's presentation ceremony. Now in their sixth year "The Ethnic
Multicultural Media Awards" look to recognise outstanding contributions to
media, made by individuals and organisations, in Britains etnically diverse
society,
The award for "Best Comedy/Comedian" was introduced in
2001 and previous winners have included Omid Djalili and Jeff Mirza.
Djalili was on hand this year to present the award to the excellent Inder Manocha,
who came out on
top of the voting despite being the only nominee without a TV profile. Anybody
else think this might be about to change?
Inder was absolutely delighted and when asked about his reaction, said: "It's
just great to have been nominated and finally to have met Art Malik! I feel all
those open spots in Clapham have finally paid off!"
The biggest name nominee was veteran comedian Lenny Henry. His latest
series has struggled to find critical acclaim, or indeed viewers, so his
nomination here was somewhat of a surprise. Fortunately the public vote
just went to prove that commendable charity work is no excuse for cringeworthy
and clichéd comedy.
Other nominees included BBC 3's "Three Non Blondes", stand-up Russel Peters,
and Meera Syal, star of "The Kumars at No.42" which, incidentally, lost out
to Channel 4's "Teachers" in the "Best TV Entertainment Production"
category.
