Most of us ask ourselves, almost on a daily basis, what have chocolate
and standup comedy got to do with each other? Well, it's a question that
anyone who saw last years "Dubble Act Awards" already know the answer
to. Following its inaugural success at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe,
the Dubble Act Award for comedy duos will once again be judged and presented
this August as part of Mervyn Stutter’s legendary ‘Pick of the Fringe’
review. In collaboration with Dubble, the Fairtrade chocolate brand ("the
crunchy bar with added Comic Relief" say the manufacturers), comedian Mervyn
Stutter will be awarding a prize for the best comedy double act at the Fringe.
Last year’s winners, ‘Laurence and Gus’, have had a large amount of success,
going on to secure a comedy series on Radio 4.
The Dubble Act
Award shortlist will be selected by Mervyn and his experienced team of talent
spotters, and the winners, who will receive the outrageous Dubble trophy, will
be selected by a panel of judges up at Edinburgh. The award ceremony, with
lots of chocolate available for all, will take place at Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of
the Fringe at 1.00pm, The Metro Gilded Balloon, Teviot Row on Saturday 21st
August.
Speaking about the event Mervyn Stutter said: “The Fringe is the world’s
largest Arts Festival and amidst the 1500 or so shows genuine talent can get a
bit lost. Mervyn Stutter’s ‘Pick of the Fringe’ is there to showcase these
talents from comedy, theatre, music, dance – the lot! So it’s great
working with Fairtrade chocolate as there is some correspondence in our aims –
to help get some well-earned exposure for those providing us with pleasure, and
a chance of a fair reward for their efforts!”
The competition is sponsored by the "Dubble " chocolate bar (hence
the clever pun in the title.... ), which is a chocolate bar that carries
the Fairtrade Mark. This means that these jolly nice people pay minimum price
above the world market price for cocoa to farmers, an extra social premium
payment, long term trading contracts, decent health and safety conditions and a
commitment to support for community programmes aimed at empowering farmers to
increase their abilities to be self sufficient. All good stuff.
