This year’s Dubble Act Award, the prize for the best comedy double act
at the Fringe, sponsored by Dubble, the Fairtrade chocolate bar, has been won by
Japanese duo Gamarjobat. The act, already enjoying sell-out shows in
Tokyo, was chosen by the judges for being a perfect example of two artists
working closely together to create a great comedy double act. The award
was presented at Mervyn Stutter’s Pick of the Fringe by top Irish comedian Dara
O Briain.
The Gamarjobat team received the outrageous Dubble Act Trophy and a £500 cash
prize. The other acts shortlisted for this year’s award were Colin and Fergus,
Hopkins and Glover, John Oliver and Andy Saltzman, last year’s Dubble Act
winners Laurence and Gus, and Canadian act Sabotage.
“Since the days of traditional double acts such as Morecome and Wise, the
double act is in a state of change. The general blend in the twenty-first
century seems to be two hander sketch comedy but Gamarjobat brings us tightly
honed comedy skills and constant physical interaction and rapport that make for
a genuine and excellent double act ,” said Mervyn Stutter, one of the judges.
“This is a show to fall in love with,” adds comedy critic Kate Copstick,
another Dubble Act judge. “Gamarjobat is irresistibly, endearingly funny
and undoubtedly the most skilled and clever comedy in Edinburgh.”
“Dubble and its Fairtrade proposition has always had fantastic support from
comedians,” says Charlotte Borger of The Day Chocolate Company (owner of the
Dubble brand). With the Dubble Act Award, it’s great to be able to give
something back to comedy. We very much hope bigger UK audiences get to see
Gamarjobat from now on.”
