Aaron Barschak (remember him? The guy that gatecrashed Prince Williams birthday party dressed as Osama
Bin Laden in a dress? Yes, him) has managed another footnote in his
career. The former publicity hungry comedian is attempting to rebuild his career
on London’s Pub Comedy Circuit, and on Sunday 21st February he was
scheduled to appear at "Toad in the Hole" at the Rosemary Branch Pub in Old
Street, London.
This is one of London’s many minor Pub Comedy nights, dedicated to new talent
mixed with a few better known faces. The context of Mr Barschak’s altercation
needs to be made clear, however, before we come across as merely glorifying in a
little minor scuffle.
A previous comedian, Alex Lasarev had somewhat riled the crowd with a gag
about a white guy stopping two black drivers for directions, commenting that
although the black gentlemen looked a little nervous to be flagged down, surely
it’s normally the black guys that do the carjacking in the USA? A woman in the
audience took some offence at this line, and despite the protestations of the
Canadian comic, continued to heckle and harass him, eventually drawing the
support of some of the other members of the audience. Things eventually
quietened down, however.
Aaron Barschak was on a little later, but during a short routine about a
photo of Hitler a gentleman in the crowd stood up and declared him a racist,
offensive and unpleasant person. Mr Barschak continued his set to the end (and
to be utterly fair to someone whom we’ve slagged off more than once, it was, by
all accounts, pretty good) and made way for the next comedian.
The comedian in question got all of three lines into his performance before
announcing "Bloody hell, that guy’s just slapped Aaron Barschak!" causing the
whole audience to turn as one to witness somewhat of a scuffle. This scuffle
proceeded outside, where concerned members of the crowd separated the two
participants.
So. Somewhat of a nothing story really, given that nothing much happened. But
it’s a happy note that even someone formerly as publicity
conscious as Aaron Barschak can recognise that hard work at a basic level is
what makes a comedian, not publicity stunts.
With thanks to Michael Imerson for the story. Next comedy night at the
Rosemary Branch Pub is March 6th, admission
free.
