This year's So You Think You're Funny? competition has been
won by a 22 year old actor from London.
Tom Allan joined the National Youth Theatre after leaving school at 18 and
has had a number of scripts played at the Lyric Hammersmith. He only began
performing stand-up in January of this year, doing his first gigs at Bethnal
Green's Working Men's Club.
Allan was presented the £2,000 prize by Julian Clary who, as one of the
judges, stated, "It wasn't easy for us. We thought all the material was
great."
Twenty-two heats were held across the country with the finals at the Gilded
Balloon, Edinburgh, where they were whittled down to nine.
In second place was Sarah Millican, a comedy writer from South Tyneside, and
third was Joe Wilkinson, a graphic-designer from London.
Previous winners include Phil Kay, Dylan Moran and Peter
Kay.
