Since opening at the 2002 Edinburgh Festival "Jerry Springer - The Opera" has
gone on to achieve huge critical acclaim, win multiple awards and
progress to holy grail of British theatre; a West End run.
Written by comedian Stewart Lee and composer Richard Thomas the
comedy-musical is based on the often-unbelievable antics of Jerry Springer's
daytime TV show and features, among others, transexuals, lesbian dwarves and
dancing Ku Klux Klansmen.
Commenting on the transition to the USA producer John Thoday said "I've been
overwhelmed by the unprecedented interest from America in Jerry Springer - The
Opera.
"We are not compromising the production one iota. Either it will be the most
enormous hit or audiences will walk out in horror."
The Broadway run is due to start in October, after a six month run in San
Francisco, although casting and venue information for the stateside performances
are yet to be announced.
