
The shortlists for the American Drama Desk awards have been announced, with
Spamalot! the Monty Python musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail
leads the way with 12 nominations. The musical was written by Eric Idle, and
includes material from several Python projects, including the song "Always Look
On The Bright Side of Life" from The Life of Brian.
The awards honour the best in New York theatre, including both Broadway and
off-Broadway productions, and were started in 1949.
David Hyde Pearce (Niles from Frasier) and Hank Azaria (one of the lead
voices in the Simpsons) were both nominated for Best Actor, with the musical
itself up for Best Musical.
Romantic musical The Light in the Piazza gained 11 nominations, with Dirty
Rotten Scoundrels (based on the Michael Caine and Steve Martin film) up for
10.
British comedian Dave Gorman has been nominated for his Googlewhack Adventure
show in the Solo Performance category. Gorman has made a serious of novel solo
shows, including Are You Dave Gorman?
