Mel Brooks' blazingly fantastic musical The Producers has a new
London cast, which is currently up and running. The lead role of Max Bialystock
- made famous by Nathan Lane on Broadway, and by Zero Mostel in the original
movie, and most recently played here by Fred Applegate - is now played by
Cory English, but users of this site will perhaps be most interested to see that
mild-mannered accountant Leo Bloom - formerly Matthew Broderick, Gene
Wilder, and John Gordon Sinclair - is now being played by The League of
Gentlemen's Reece Shearsmith ("he has an effortless charm and proves
irresistibly funny" - current issue of The Stage).
Other main roles are played by Don Gallagher (Roger de Bris), Stephen
Matthews (Carmen Ghia), and Rachel McDowell (the wondrous Ulla), with Nicolas
Colicos carrying on in the role of Franz Liebkind, Nazi and pigeon-fancier.
The Producers is at the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane, where it
deserves to run forever, if not longer.
