Showbiz stars have been flocking to give their support to plans to build a
lasting monument to the comic genius Spike Milligan. Brockley ward
councillor and Green Party leader on the London Assembly Darren Johnson, has led
the campaign for a statue to celebrate the former Goons star to be located in
the town centre of the South London borough of Lewisham.
Jools Holland, London Mayor Ken Livingstone, Graham Norton and Jack Dee have
all pledged their support for the project.
Councillor
Johnson is now pushing Lewisham town council to apply for lottery funding to
build the monument. He said: "Spike Milligan is a well-remembered figure and it
would be nice to bring some public art to Lewisham town centre.
"I am disappointed Lewisham Council hasn't given formal backing to the idea
but they have promised to get in touch with Spike's relatives."
