Standup comedian Tony Burgess has beaten off over a hundred other applicants
to become the BBCs first 'Comedy-Writer in Residence' in Manchester. In
layman's terms, he has been given a bursary of £6,000 to help develop regional
comedy in the city.
Burgess, who was amongst six other standups who were also given money to
develop scripts for the corporation, is best known as the co-writer and co-star
of the Radio 4 comedy "Night Class", where he starred alongside Johnny
Vegas.
Speaking about the award Burgess said: "I'm very proud to receive this award,
and the money - mainly the money. And if the BBC could pay me in scratchcards,
that'll save me a bit of time queuing in the post office."
Kenton Allen, the editor of comedy at the BBC added: "Tony has a unique comic
voice and his passion for writing is totally infectious."
