UK comedian Harry Hill has had something rather unfortunate happen to him.
No, his latest TV show hasn't failed in the ratings. No, he hasn't cut himself
on that oversized collar he likes to wear.
Fraudsters have siphoned £280,000 from his bank account. By using threats to
obtain answers to confidential security questions, two unnamed people are
alleged to have stolen around £500,000 in total.
The security answers allowed the crooks to take money from these banks
accounts and transfer it elsewhere. It was then subsequently withdrawn from the
new accounts and disappeared. Hill (real name Dr Matthew Hall) spotted that
something was up when he queried a suspicious transactions at his bank, the
Halifax.
One can only imagine the conversation.
The bank has recovered £150,000 and has refunded the rest of the money.
Sharmane Dillon, a Halifax customer adviser, admits passing on customer details
but denies fraud.
