Sport Relief is a charity encouraging people to achieve sporting feats to
raise money. It has raised £30m for charities in the UK and abroad since it
launched in 2002.
Celebrity endorsements and tie-ins are a fairly regular thing, but now UK
Comedy hotshot David Walliams (yes, he of Little
Britain fame) is to swim the English Channel for them.
He has been training with former Olympic pentathlete Greg Whyte, who has said
"David has been working tirelessly over the past 11 months to make an attempt on
the Channel, demonstrating a level of work and commitment as great as any elite
athlete I have met."
"It's one of the toughest physical challenges on the planet."
Walliams himself added "I reckon I have a 50/50 chance of getting across. I
hope people see it as a symbolic thing. I'll just be in a pair of Speedos and
goggles - it's what the public wants."
To clarity, Mr Walliams will also be covered in grease to keep him warm, and
fed food from a pole. He is expected to be in the water for around sixteen
hours.
