Filling the last slot in long show of 15 minute sets can be a bit of a mixed
blessing. On one hand you have a much more relaxed audience, who have by
that point settled in to the show. But on the other hand, much of the
audience may be thinking "Well everyone else has been funny so far, what have
you got to add to it?"
On this occasion Dara O'Briain rose to that challenge. His jolly and
likable Irish persona won over the audience as he delivered some very humorous
stories and jokes. He paints some wonderful visual images, such as his
large form being slowly dragged through the water by a struggling dolphin during
a "Swimming with Dolphins" experience. During this, and many other parts
of his set, he engaged in a significant amount of two-way banter with the
audience, which thankfully worked very well (unlike the cheesy 'Audience
Participation' that some comics seem to achieve).
Listening to Dara can be a bit of an adventure. You get the feeling
that he generally intends his material to take him from A to B, but if he goes
via X, Y and Z on the way without planning to, then so much the better.
And the audience tended to agree, as he moved off on various tangents.
This turned a 15 minute set into about half an hour, and the extra laughs
certainly did not go unappreciated.
