It's rare nowadays to find something that truly qualifies as ground breaking.
Most subjects and taboos have been tried and re-worked over and over again.
Shazia Mirza is therefore a breath of fresh air. Not only is she an
outstandingly talented comedian she is also highly skilled at using her own
background to send up the bigotries that she faces everyday. She talks openly
about the stir that she has caused in the Muslim world by doing what she does.
It's a very brave act and It's natural that religion and moreover the oppressive
culture that comes with it takes up a big part of her routine.
It needs to be noted that Ms Mirza is not disrespectful of her religion; the
subjects that are used are the customs and traditions that are used, often
against women. Also the attitude towards Muslims as a whole is brought up. As
well as being very funny it does make you think the stupidity of some people's
way of thinking nowadays. One story that sticks in my mind is when Ms Mirza was
on a plane and a woman refused to sit next to her. The disdain for that
sort of attitude was plain to see and needless to say, the way the following gag
was delivered was delightful.
Her material is new and fresh mainly one would guess because not everyone
can raise the subjects that Ms Mirza does. Subjects like suicide bombers would
simply not work when raised by many other comedians. Saying that there is plenty
on non-religious humour on offer all delivered with the same high level of
timing and skill.
Ms Mirza has a dry, sarcastic and subtle humour that truly was a joy to
watch! Her final line summed up her thoughts on the whole hysteria shown by the
media nowadays. "I've been Shazia Mirza - or at least that's what it says on my
pilot's license!" Pure class.
