Canadian born, L.A. living Davis has a theme to her act and it's her. I
almost feel cheated about knowing that she is only three-and-a-half feet tall
before she came on. I could sense the horror of anticipation filling some of my
fellow audience members as she made her way to the stage. I think I might have
wanted to experience the, "What the fu-" emotions that rippled through the room
but I didn't. I knew and was prepared for “The Ferrari” when she hauled herself
unceremoniously onto a chair so she could reach the microphone.
Davis is what she is; she doesn’t apologise, compromise or try to make it
easy for us and in this world of PC consciousness I can understand that
sensibilities may start to conflict in the audience’s mind – "Aargh! Mustn’t
laugh at little person. But little person is funny. But jokes are about her
being little. Nooooooooo!"
She talks dirty, swears and delights in the suffering that straight talking
children sometimes bring on themselves. She verges on surreal with the things
she does when people mistake her for a child and the varied ways she embarrasses
her husband in public. The standard topics for many female comics get covered:
periods, underwear, toilet bits, beauty treatments, etc; but all get Davis's
unique "angle".
She's funny, there's not much else to say. Her material is entirely based
around her experience of being the height she is and the misconceptions that are
cast against her. It’s edutainment people. Enlightenment through the gift of
comedy.
She is currently on tour in the UK until 8th May. Her remaining dates can be
found on her website at tanyaleedavis.com.
