"Chocolate and tampons" are the first topic of
discussion for Sabrina Matthews, an American comedian hailing from L.A.
One wonders if this is a sensible choice of material, especially as an
opener. The gags are reasonably strong but you can't help feeling a little
uninspired by exactly the sort of subjects that have forged the stereotypes of
female comedians.
Fortunately she soon moves on to a wider selection of subjects. She is
openly gay and much of her act relates to this, or recalls the fact as
she covers other topics ranging from air travel, mortgages and life
insurance, Little Chef's and some light politics.
The material remained strong and there were some good laughs, but the
pace was somewhat sluggish and Matthews appeared to wait for the end of the
audience reaction to each punchline before moving on to the next joke.
While this might suit the whooping and hollering of U.S. audiences, British
audiences seem to respond better to acts that ride on the coat-tails
of each line and build to a crescendo of laughter
that was missing from this set.
Sabrina Mathews is by no means an unenjoyable act, far from it, but with a
quickening of pace and a little fine-tuning, to better suit the demands of
a British audience, the laughs could be coming thicker and
faster.
