The publicity blurb tells us
to expect an "English-born, Jamaican-bred Canadian jester". Is a man in
pointy shoes, a coloured suit, bell-laden three pronged hat and dreadlocks
about to walk on stage? Fortunately not, and the only part of this
slightly bizarre mental image that turns out to be true is the dreadlocks.
As Ronnie Edwards dances on to the stage you are immediately struck by his larger
than life presence and an infectious energy that has the laughter
building before he even says a word. When he does open his mouth the crowd
are treated to the perfect mix of physical comedy, punchy one-liners and irreverent
observations.
Covering a wide
variety of subjects, his unflagging livliness refuses to let up and everyone is more than happy
to be pulled along for the ride. You might imagine this to be a little "in-your-face",
but Edwards somehow manages to infuse this physical vivacity with an almost
contradictory degree of chilled out, laid back, "cool".
Having already made waves at home in Canada, let's hope
that similar success lies just around the corner for him over here.
Refreshingly different and inevitably destined for "headline" status, he is
without a doubt "one to watch".
