A much sought
after headline act, Simon Evans is a comic at the
top of his game and wreaking of experience. The snobbish and superior persona
could potentially alienate a crowd, but Evans pulls it
off perfectly by playing on each audience member's belief that he must be talking
about somebody else.
Of course, it does no harm that the material is universally top notch,
with every line perfectly honed and never failing to get the
laugh. Add this to an equally remarkable performance - where
each pause, each inflection, each subtle nuance is delivered with perfect
precision - and a stage presence so strong that a heckler can be put in their
place with a mere disdainful glance.
On the brief occasions when Evans engages the audience directly his incisive
wit shines just as brightly and it would be nice to see him do so more
often. Although "if it ain't broke, why fix it?" Simon Evans is
clearly one of the most confident, polished and entertaining acts on the circuit
and a touchstone by which others can be judged. If you've never seen him;
do it now. If you have; see him again.
