When you're the comedy MC at a music festival, it's easy to feel a little out
of place. After all, most people are there to see a band that's not on for
another two hours, and if people don't like you, they can just walk out. Adam
Montgomery does an excellent job of making this a bad idea.
His material was sharp and to the point, not distracting from the main acts
but warming up the audience for them. He has the usual MC tricks to get a crowd
going, but combined them with some genuinely humorous routines about soldiers in
Iraq, the worries of childbirth, and an excellent short routine about the nature
of being bi-curious.
He was well aware of his role, choosing on several occasions to go into the
crowd for his set, involving them and lifting the laughter each time. The crowd
enjoyed what he had to say, but he left them wanting more...handily, since he
had three excellent comedy acts to introduce.
I would certainly be interested to see what he can do as an act, rather than
an MC, because someone who is this charming and friendly could hold my attention
for quite some time.
