Even though his dishevelled hair
and chilled vibe gives him a very ‘dude’ attitude and it is all too easy for him
to slip into this persona when his set takes him through a surfer point-of-view,
Manolis Zontanos is Canadian not
American.
I find it odd listening to a
North-American accent in a UK venue in much the same the way I find it peculiar
listening to an English accent in the middle of a US sit-com but if there was
any apprehension in the audience then it was Zontanos’s laid back attitude and
unashamed, brutal delivery that that got everyone howling with unbridled
mirth.
The majority of Zontanos’s set is
on sex and that mainly revolves around his personal inadequacies and gender
role-reversal scenarios. He was overtly rude but nobody could really take
offence since his set was from his own perspective and when it wasn’t
specifically self-derisive then it generally focussed on the puerility of men’s
sexual desires. Of course this sort of humour appeals to both sexes as women
find these sorts of revelations hilarious and the average bloke is practically
proud of them.
Zontanos is a relaxed, likeable
and exceptional comedian.
