Pete Cain is
one of those comedians who have adopted a ‘character’ to perform instead of
delivering a set being himself. Well, I hope that’s the case anyway.
He plays that specific type of
stage persona that seems to be quite prolific on the circuit; the social misfit,
introverted, uncomfortable and dour. He self-proclaims to be the laziest man in
comedy and goes on to try to prove this by delivering his one and only joke.
But, ah, you see, that’s a joke
as well. Cain refrains from bounding out gag after gag hoping that the good ones
will cover for the mediocre (or they’ll just be drowned out); he takes his time
and that makes the audience listen to every word and concentrate on his set.
This isn’t as much as an effort
as it may sound because Cain is a very adept story teller and very funny along
the way. It’s amazing (and disappointing) how quickly his time runs out
considering the staid pace, which just goes to show what a totally engaging and
entertaining performer he is.
