I’d have to consider Paul Sinha
to be one of the bravest stand ups I have ever seen. Not in the sense that he
tells hardcore, risqué jokes (although he does) but because his material is
incredibly personal.
He has a few specific topics to
his set and each one is an admission to his life, ethnicity, and career. He is
unashamedly blunt in his feelings towards racists, homophobes and ignorants in
general and I think it’s this honesty and lack of playing a stage character that
makes him more accessible and trusted by his audience. Obviously part of Sinha’s
bravery comes from the fact that his material may actually be attacking a
portion of his audience but he must see that as their problem rather than
his.
Sinha has a refreshing angle on
observational comedy regaling tales (many self-deprecating) from his ethnic and
social background yet being almost anti-stereotypical as well as delivering a
smattering of incredibly crude, potentially offensive but rib-aching one
liners.
A thoroughly recommended
act.
