When you go to see Jo Brand, you have a fairly good idea what
to expect. Even while booking your ticket you have an idea of what will be
in the act. You expect to hear a sort of whining stream of "Cake, Cake,
I'm so fat, aren't men all bastards but not really, cake."
For those die-hard fans* who want and or expect this, then her
current tour will not disapoint. For those of you, including many of Jo's
critics, who want a slight change of set or some more original material from
her, then the show may disappoint slightly more than the level of disappointment
implied in the earlier statement.
Jo's set is very short, lasting only 49 minutes, which while not
leaving you screaming for more, leaves you with a resounding feeling of "is that
it?".
Luckily, this performance was held in a theatre which is only 200
yards from this reviewers house, leaving little excuse to not to go along and
see what this veteran stand-up has to offer. However, for those of you who
may need to walk 300 yards or more, or spend £3 on a taxi ride, unless you are a
die-hard* Jo Brand fan then you may want to evaluate what else the
affordmentioned £3 could be spent on. (examples include a Big Indelable Marker
Pen, or a Buy-one-get-one-free packet of Fish Fingers from Iceland).
* Note - We are referring to fans of Jo Brand who
are "die-hard", not fans of Die-hard with Bruce Willis, and anyone going to the
show expecting to see Jo in a string verst fighting off terrorists with bad
european accents in a tall building may be disappointed.
