Ed Petrie occupied the unenviable position of being the
first on at the final of the National Talent Hunt 2003 at the York Comedy
Festival. Despite some initial nerves we were quickly treated to
enthusiasm and energy in abundance.
As he chatted to us about Friends Reunited and showed us
his juvenile cartoons he built up a rappor with the audience, exhibited some
great comic timing and managed to stay comfortably on the right side of the fine
line between "zany" and irritating.
A brilliant rant about Tolkein and The Lord Of The Rings was the highlight of
his set and showcased his energetic, animated style. It felt like the
"grand finale" of his routine, but was instead followed by a sketch involving
"Special Brew" which, while still funny, seemed like an unexpected change in
style and prevented him from going out on the high that he could have done.
All in all Petrie was instantly likeable and there is no
doubt that audiences will enjoy listening to more of his ramblings as he expands
his set. One to watch!
