Several months ago Funny.co.uk reported on the ongoing refurbishment of
London's Hackney Empire Theatre, which had had its doors closed since September
2001 as it underwent it's essential make-over. Now that the refurbishment
work is finished and the historic theatre is returned to its former glory, we
are pleased to announce that the Hackney Empire will host the auditions for one
of Britain's most prestigious comedy competitions.
Auditions for the 'Hackney Empire New Act of the Year 2004' will be held at
the theatre in January 2004. So if you're a budding comic and fancy your
chances then why not enter. The worst that can happen is that people will
laugh at you... which is kind of the idea. Entrants will typically have at
least two years performing experience, and will be expected to present a five
minute piece. The organisers are looking for variety acts such as Stand-up
Comedy, Musical Comedy or Speciality Acts.
Finals will take place at the Hackney Empire on Saturday 28th February, and
will be compered by Arthur Smith. A selection from the final bill will also be
asked to play at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Previous winners include: Harry Hill, Ronnie Ancona, Ardal
O'Hanlon,
Linda Smith, and more recently Men in Coats, Matt Kirshen &
Rhod Gilbert.
Applicants for the Auditions should phone 020 8510 4500 and ask for 'New Act
of the Year Auditions', or email info@hackneyempire.co.uk with the
words 'NATY AUDITION' in the subject line.
