After being given copies of his stand-up work, only recently, I feel such a
fool! I can safely say the man, who is unfourtunetly only with us thanks to
albums made by his friends, has changed my life. He is more than just a
comedian, yet all he did was tell the truth. I have come to the conclusion that,
It was not Jesus, but Bill, who was sent down to earth to save us from our sins.
He put a bullet through stand-up comedy, turning it into something more
than a "comic" relentlessly ploughing through meaningless dribble or wacky
clones of futility, like that Lee Evans, jumping around making stupid
noises. Like all of the great rock musicians, his art had soul and passion. Even
his 1991 Gulf War material has meaning and relevence, especially, this time
around it's Bush junior.
It's kind of ironic how the David Letterman Show, all those years ago,
censored his work. This famous incident proved his passion for expressing his
ideology, also it made his material become the absolute, no holes barred truth
about the evils of money, similar to the Brass Eye scandal, in this country.
Because Bill hicks expressed his rage at things that were seen as "investment"
or "profit", The Letterman show didn't want to loose capital! It annoyed
him, so much, that he wrote a 32 page letter to a friend who was also a critic,
about this infringement on his liberty.
One thing that does stand out, about him, is that he was a natrual. Its not
often you come across comedians, who become sucsessful and carry on doing stand
up. Most of them sod-off and make appauling sitcoms (no offence, Lee!). Although
I was only nine years old, at the time of his death. His genius, I think, will
never date or get boring, afterall, to quote the manager of Stan Makitas Donuts
in Waynes World "The worlds a twisted place".
