Since
"The Fast Show" left our screens the world has been deprived of a truly great
character comedy that could even hope to fill it's shoes, at least not with anything that you would be happy to find in your own shoes. It's
with great pleasure then, that we kneel before Matt Lucas and David Walliams and
hail them as our saviours for bringing their award winning Radio 4 show to our grateful
TVs.
The show is to make it's debut on BBC 2 later in the year, but those of us
with digital TV have had the chance to see the first two episodes already on BBC
THREE, who are airing the show every Tuesday at 9pm, with repeats on
Sundays at 9:30pm and Mondays at 10:30pm.
Those of you who are familiar with Lucas & Walliams
work, such as the brilliant "Rock Profiles" on the now-defunct
digital channel "UK Play", will have some idea what to expect in terms of
their off-kilter humour and surreal view of life. But "Little Britain" throws a
huge dash of political incorrectness into the mix, with many characters sure
to remind you of people you know, and a few more that you will be glad you
don't.
The fast-paced show jumps between glimpses into the lives of several
regular characters ranging from a delinquent schoolgirl, to committed welsh
'homosexualist' Daffyd, to a transvestite seaside guesthouse owner,
to Margary Dawes and her slimming club, and many more, all linked together
by Tom "Dr Who" Baker's brilliantly bizarre, and bizzarely brilliant,
narration.
Little Brittain is an oasis in the current comedy desert and,
cheesy metaphors aside, if the quality can stay this high, and as
consistently funny, for the entire series then we will have a true classic on our
hands.
