In what seems like no time at all "The office" has become a landmark of
British comedy. It has done more than any other show in recent years to
hand viewers a cool and refreshing glass of water in the barren desert that
has been the British sit-com.
It is therefore a great pleasure to finally be able to own the second
series on DVD. Many of you obviously agree; within just days of it's release it
has already smashed the record sales of the first series.
In case you hadn't realised, we at Funny.co.uk are huge
fans of Ricky
Gervais
and Stephen Merchant's brilliantly witty and observational look at office life,
so let's not waste any more time harping on about how wonderful the series is
(you know that already!) and talk about the DVD.
While we got a two disk set for Series 1, it's just a single disk this time around,
with less special features. That's not neccessarily a bad thing as going
into the same depth with the Series 2 extras could have been somewhat
repetetive. Instead, we are treated to some excellent deleted scenes, of
which there could almost be enough to piece together an entire new episode,
and a selection of great out-takes consisting primarily of cast members failing
to contain their own laughter.
We also get a video diary, made by creators Gervais
and Merchant, charting the developement and production of the second
series. It's certainly not reference material for a TV production student
but it really gives an insight into how much fun was had by everyone
involved and just how irritating Ricky
Gervais
really is.
So all that remains is for us to say all the usual stuff about it
being an essential in any comedy fans collection and a chance to own
a piece of television history. They may be clichés but they are rarely more apt
or more true.
