If you have forced yourself to sit all the way through any
of the recent horror/spoof/comedy movies to come out of Hollywood lately, then
you probably found that most, if not all, used up all their best gags in the
trailer leaving you with little more than an aching posterior and the experience
of 90 minutes surrounded by incoherent text messaging morons to show for your hard
earned fiver.
So what great news it is that "Shaun
Of The Dead " has never been anywhere near Hollywood and found life at Ealing Studios
in London. It's a thoroughly British film... and we mean that in a
good way!
Penned by "Spaced" luminaries Simon Pegg and Edgar
Wright, it is sure to be an instant hit with fans of the aforementioned
sitcom. But that is by no means to say that "Shaun
Of The Dead
" is simply
"Spaced: The Movie". They have kept the essence of what made "Spaced" so good while painting with a different brush.
Out are the numerous pop-culture references, excusing a
rather major reference to a certain George Romero flick, and in is the razor sharp
dialogue and impeccable comic timing that we have come to expect from Pegg and
Wright. Couple this with a universally excellent cast list, that read's like a "who's
who?" from some of the most important British TV comedies of recent years (even if
some of them do only spend a fraction of a second on screen), and
you're itching to add it to your DVD collection before you've even finished your
popcorn.
Simon Pegg has recently hinted that a new series of Spaced is unlikely as he
is turning his attention to more movie-making. As TV viewers we might have
to mourn the loss of a true great, but as cinema-goers we have a lot to look
forward to!
