Red Dwarf Series 4 DVD Review
Watching Red Dwarf Series Four reminded me of how good sci-fi TV can be, and
how far behind it several other series were. This particular season takes in
moral dilemmas, time travel, alternate dimensions and
the-ends-justifies-the-means, and still manages to be riotously funny.
"Camille" tells the story of a stranger to the group, who looks as though
she’s the answer to everyone’s dreams. However, as always, the truth is slightly
different. You can also play spot the ‘Casablanca’ reference, if you feel you
want to.
"D.N.A." is another science gone wrong story, mixing the cheap comedy of
Lister being turned into a chicken with the more serious questions of whether a
physical change can really make you happy when you’re still the same inside.
More excellent work from Robert Llewellyn, who appeared without make-up in a
large proportion of this episode.
"Justice" starts well with an extended gag about space mumps, delivers an
excellent middle section of extended humour relating to Rimmer’s incompetence,
and finishes with an all-action sequence that’s hard to top. One of my favourite
episodes.
"White Hole" begins with the return of Talkie Toaster, a character that was,
ahem, sadly missed in its absence. Kryten attempts to restore Holly’s
intelligence, with disastrous consequences, and only Lister’s pool skills stand
between the crew and oblivion.
"Dimension Jump" features the first ever appearance of Ace Rimmer – need I
say more? Smoke me a kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.
The final episode, "Meltdown" is completely stolen by the Elvis impersonator,
which is some mean feat considering how good the scene with Caligula torturing
Lister is. Chris Barrie as Rimmer also turns in a fine performance as he leads
his rag-tag band of heroes to glory.
Again, the episodes come complete with Smeg Up’s, deleted scenes, another
excellent cast commentary, a full length documentary on the making of the
series, special Ace Rimmer feature and the Can’t Smeg Won’t Smeg Red Dwarf
themed episode of Can’t Cook Won’t Cook. Excellent value for money all
round!
