So maybe you saw the televised
show on BBC 1; so what? You didn’t see everything, did you? Wasn’t it a bit odd
that nearly every comedian referred to their seven minute slot yet it seemed
like their set was over in a fraction of the time.
Did you find it slightly bizarre
that with Jon Culshaw’s two appearances he was neatly shaven the first time but
had a manly stubble the second?
And why was it that everyone
laughed so heartedly at Eddie Izzard’s opening line?
These questions and many more
that you might be asking could be answered on this DVD release of the charity
gig hosted by Ross, Dee, Norton, Savage and Clary and featuring the cream of
British stand-up the likes never to be seen again unless snippets of their
individual gigs are released on a ‘Cream of British Stand-Up’ compilation DVD.
But that wouldn’t be quite the same. On top of the comedians there are also
comic performances from ‘mind-bender’ Derren Brown and Stomp.
As it is uncut and unedited you
get every swear word, distasteful gag, and element of corporate ridicule left in
place for your edification as well as each set being healthily extended.
Every act is impeccable in their
own right and there are even a few moments that should go down in the annals of
comedy history including Johnny Vegas getting-off with an audience member and
Dawn French performing as Catherine Zeta Jones.
With each comedian being split
into separate ‘chapters’ you’re given the option to jump straight to your
favourites (or skip the unfavoured) but that’s the only feature the DVD
sports.
A worthy addition to any comedy collector’s library not only for its
marking as “The UK’s Biggest Live Comedy Event Ever!” or for the ease at which
money can be given to aid the Tsunami Appeal but simply because it is
excellently filmed, produced and is downright
hilarious.
