This is the third film from Kevin Smith, following Mallrats and Clerks. It's
possibly a little different than you might expect.
The story concerns one Holden (Ben Affleck), a comic book writer. He seems to
have a fairly happy life. He writes and draws comics, he enjoys helping his
friend get publicity at comic conventions, things seem good. Then he meets
Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams) - and she's perfect. She's funny, bright, attractive,
she also writes comics for a living.
Unfortunately for Holden, she's also gay.
The rest of the film deals with the consequences of this realisation on
Holden's part, and manages to tie in a fair amount of moralising on behalf of
several characters. It is, of course, also riotously funny, displaying Kevin
Smith's unique ear for fast, witty dialogue, which does, however, feature lots
and lots of swearing.
It also features Jason Mewes and Smith himself as Jay and Silent Bob. They're
only in the one scene, but this film is certainly notable as The One That Silent
Bob Talks In. Bob, in fact, has the longest single monologue in the whole film,
and what's more, Kevin Smith pulls it off brilliantly.
The DVD extras include the ordinary stuff, the trailer, cast commentary and
so on. However, the deleted scenes and outtakes sections are all introduced by
various members of the cast and crew - and they're funny unscripted too! The
whole extras package is worth watching for the fun they had making it.
Overall, an excellent film that's funny and deals with some serious topics
too, and extras that are genuinely worth watching.
