Dogma, a film by Kevin Smith (who also directed Chasing
Amy), is a somewhat complicated film.
On the one hand, it's a knockabout comedy about a pair of disgraced angels
trying to get back into Heaven, and the woman Chosen By God to stop them,
featuring the usual expletive-driven dialogue, Jay And Silent Bob, an, ahem, Poo
Demon and so forth.
On the other hand, it's a philosophical comedy dealing with matters of faith,
destiny, Christian theology and The Way Things Are In Religion These Days.
Linda Fiorentino stars as Bethany, who is informed by the Metatron (Alan
Rickman in his usual sparkling form) that she has been chosen to stop two
renegade angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck) from returning to
Heaven, because if they do, the world will end. She's helped out by The 13th
Apostle (Chris Rock) and Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith) and
opposed by Azrael (Jason Lee).
This has all come about because God (played by - no, I won't spoil the
surprise) has gone missing.
I might not be doing a very good job of telling you about the film, but I
could say that it's the sort of film that lots of fundamentalist Christians in
the USA got very annoyed about.
Special features include Cast and Crew Interviews and
trailers.
